This total obsession with extra panel lines and cutting up panels is really starting to put me off Gunpla. What happened to the sleek lines, now it just looks like a whole pile of bits lumped on top of each other and in most cases completely destroys the form the designer intended.

I have to agree with Gunny on this one.

They are starting to look way to busy, and you don't know where to look. And a lot of them don't make sense of why they are there. Which adds to the confusion.

And on a mechanical standpoint, I wouldn't send a combat vehicle out with so many places for fire to penetrate. And it completely destroys the whole point of what armour is for. It has really only gotten popular since last year, or been really noticed.

But have you noticed most of the winner of the GBWC this year has been about being creative and none had really had this type of work added.

definitely too much, i don't mind the extra line or too or even some armour cut away as long as the fact its still a war machine is held up

This kind of 'super detail' work always confuses me because there's so much going on that I don't know where to look at. Plus, I wouldn't dare to pilot such a machine to the battlefield... the armor would probably crumble the moment something hit it

To me it is starting to seem people are detailing for the sake of detailing. Same as some of the kit bashing that is out there. It just doesn't make sense. I know that these are only based one fictional designs. But what usually makes people think they are real is the fact that real design principles are used in that design work. Especially the newer MG's and HG kits.

But I agree the above kit has way to much going on. Kudos to his skills. He has shown that he can add all that detail. But hasn't really looked into the why of how things work. Such as armour and how placement of panels and hatches are created within in the designs. Just placing them all over makes no sense in the overall scheme of the design. So in the end a confusing mess has been created. And as Gunny has noted: It can destroy what the original designer intended for the design. But there seems to be a big push out there that you must kit bash, or modify Gunpla . Not to often do you see people trying to show off a well made kit without all the bells and whistles added anymore.
That's my 2 cents worth over the lunch break.

On the topic of over-detailing your kits, I found this picture in my computer

This is taking the concept of 'going wild' to a whole new level  ::)

I'm with Gunny on that as well. I like some of the added detailed panels/bits to some kits, but sometimes too much is way too much. It's nice to have details and details that make sense, but some details are just not necessary. The stock Unicorn Gundam for example has lots of opening panels and I think that's already plenty--adding more opening panels is kind of senseless.

I could go out on a limb and say this is like someone trying to turn Gunpla into the BayFormers...
