Noob ways to do kshatriya's emblems
« on: November 15, 2017, 05:25:01 AM »

So I'm really new to gunpla. Never painted a kit or used topcoat (although I do have some gundam markers for selective painting / replacing stickers), and I think I'm currently making my 5th kit or so. I'm currently assembling kshatriya, but I really don't like the sticks. Maybe I just haven't done a good job placing them on the curved surfaces, but they look pretty rubbish.

I know there's a reverse wash technique, but it looks pretty involved and I'll end up paying a small fortune for stuff I'm only ever going to use once (my life is too busy right now for painting most of my kits). Are there any alternatives to this? Is it possible to handpaint / use gundam markers to paint the part? Or is this too hard to get right?

Of course it's possible hand paint the Sleeves emblems. I always hand paint all that type of detail. Here's a few examples.

Thanks, that looks really good. I'll try hand painting them then.

Just get yourself some 0, 00 and 000 brushes, a small sponge in a dish to wipe the drying paint off the tip every so often and away you go. I find Gunze acrylics work the best. You can use Tamiya but they tend to dry on the brush tip a bit to quick. If you decide to use enamels then you don't have to worry about the sponge as they take a lot longer to dry than acrylics.

Thanks for the help. It's a bit daunting and it seems that most of the guides are a lot more involved than I plan to go (just painting the emblems).

I'd need to hand paint on primer first though, right? And I could just only paint the raised emblem parts and skip the rest, since it's essentially colour accurate, right? Does the paint tend to run into the depressions instead? Ever tried with gundam markers?

No primer needed. I never use it for anything I paint.

Paint the recesses first (if you want) then the raised sections. The paint won't run unless you thin it. I use it straight out of the jar and paint freehand. Brush painting and masking tape aren't the best of friends. I wouldn't get too worried about the so called guides otherwise you'll just end up getting so confused you'll never get anything done. Pick a method that you think you can do and get stuck in.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'll try it out, those stickers are really bugging me too much.

The foil stickers are always going to be a PITA and even if you get them right over time they will eventually peel off.

If you have any more questions throw them up and we'll see if we can help. There may not be much going on here thanks to Faceache but I still keep an eye the place as do a few others.

Feel free to put some pics up in The Catapult once you've got it finished.
