This kit is based primarily on the old MG rgm-79 GM type C trading out some of the original parts for some handy down parts from the MG Mk2 gundam kit and a couple of freshly tooled runners for the powered GM armour parts

Most of the MK2 parts are not even used. In fact the main reason for addition of these 3 runners is for the bazooka.

First off here are pics of the manual.

The Gundam MK2 parts included

My only real gripe with the kit is that it still uses the old MG style hands which are horrible.

I always use Koto or Builders Parts hands. Bandai really never put any effort into their hands, even the new posable ones suck. I suppose that's why they sell aftermarket hands  ::) ::)

If memory serves me right, you can build a complete Bazooka, Beam Rifle, and a pair old spare Rifle Cartridges based on that sprue set.  Probably part of the backpack. But the rest of the Mk-II sprues probably won't be of any value except as spares for someone with a broken Mk-II or junk bits. I agree it's a shame that you didn't get newer hands--I remember cursing blue whenever my old GM Type C kept dropping its weapons--I don't think they'll be much good for holding the Mk II Beam Rifle without support.

The increased backpack doesn't make it too top-heavy, does it?

Not at all. Its all that light weight plastic so it adds very little.
