GruntBuild #5 ....too ugly for a name!!
« on: August 17, 2013, 10:26:10 PM »

MSV GM Canon and Sniper

This one kicked my butt from one side of the table to the other for some reason.
I only had white primer and it went downhill from there!!!  :-[
White paint didnt work and some of the seams got worse as I worked on them......  >:(

A bit more rough and ready than I was going for but.....

Really not that happy with the final result but am entering it as I keep my commitments!  :(

EDITED...Newer photos taken outside in natural light as todays the last time I can get photos. A little better but uglies still ugly

cool looking build.
the red suit looks to me me like it's sing opera with the one open hand and the other clenched fist.

Please don't take this the wrong way.

I think you should spend a bit of time on your basics, some of the work you have put out before has been pretty good, this looks rushed and the end result shows.
The seams and paint aren't up to your standard.

I read an article where a modeller was challenged to built a model with seams and not paint or prime the finished model, it helped improve basic construction and seam removal no end and the finished product was actually quite good.

Just something to think about..........

No offense taken and trust me, this wasnt rushed.

I guess I should have stripped the white primer off and started again. White paint+hand painting these colours= not pretty

The seams were puttied/sanded so many times it wasnt funny but it seemed to get worse the more I puttied and sanded! The putty seemed to make the seam line more apparent if thats possible (esp. the side body ones).

I didnt want to put this up but then again, I didnt want to be one of the 'gunna's' that plague these GB and frustrate the organisers to no end.

I know its not my best but we are all entitled to a bad build!! My just had to be a public one due to my sense of commitment!

I can't say too much as I'm judging but may I suggest that you take some photo's using a tripod with aperture priority and NO flash. Your weathering techniques do not appear to respond to flash very well. I'm pretty sure that with a bit of aperture manipulation and no flash the finished product will look so much better.

Just remember that you don't have to put up the money shots until next Tuesday. There's no prize for first finished  ;) You set a pretty high benchmark with your last Grunt Build entry it would be a pity to see it ruined this time around by less than optimal pictures.

Nice job.  I think the new pictures look a lot better.  What type of paints are you using to hand paint?

What kind/brand of White Primer did you use? I've used Tamiya's spraycan (extra fine) white primer and have never really had issues with it. If it's a doifferent brand I might need to avoid it.

@Wavehawk...it was the Mr Hobby series (Mr White Surfacer??)

It was the only primer I had at the time and it just didnt play nice! Probably more me than the primers fault!

Never used Mr Hobby's primer.

I guess it depends on how thick you put it on and how much white you need. I use Tamiya White on Gundams (which are pretty much white anyway) or anythign that needs a cover-up of all the crappy sanding I do (eg clean, polished smooth surfaces). For darker colors I'd either hit it with the rougher grey primer or even just straight on with the paint. Basically, I'd only use White Primer if I really, REALLY need a white base--again, that means Lily-white Gundams.

In essence (And this is IMHO) you'd only use white primer if it needs to be white or it requires a light base (in other words you're painting colors like orange, yellow--those bright translucent ones that look terrible if you're painting on gray or other undercolor). If you use fatigue greens/camo/black, and other 'naturally opaque' colors, primer's next to unnecessary.

...oh, and a delayed reaction to the pics: "The Guuuuuncannon of the Opera is heeereee---inside my mind~~~~" ;D

I like Tristan's rustic look. It's kind of his signature move.

LOL @ Matt's O Sole Mio comment!
