GAF vs Japan: Salaryman & Sonar Smash Osaka!
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:20:34 AM »

Awww shi...

It is surely about to go down, for on this eve two of the most dangerous minds in the gunpla community will meet in a furious and uncompromising battle of imbibement in grotesque proportions.

Osaka is the arena.

Armed with only the concise wit and wherewithall of two monsters unleashed in a foreign land, the beasts of Gunpla rain cataclysmic destruction upon the hapless bayside shanties.

Sparing none, consuming all.

The fury is unleashed.

Ok so we're already a couple of drinks in to happy hour at the Hub, notorious sinister lair of Mecha Godzilla and Gaiking Sky Dragon PKA ASM & GaiGun (Regrettably, Gaiking Sky Dragon is laying waste to another unsuspecting Japanese city and cannot be joining us this evening) when last drinks are called, meaning a pint of rum and coke stops being two-fitty and jumps to five bucks. In his infinite wisdom, Mecha Godzilla orders a quick sixer.

Boom. We down these without heed nor hinderance, eager to continue the swath of destruction. On to Den-Den town.

But wait, what is this? Could it be? The RG Aile Strike I worked to complete right up until I physically had to leave for the train to Namba? Indeed. Unfortunately the roar of the titans was too fierce, thus there were yet to be stickers applied. Alas all of my majestic and intricate panel line work was washed out by the flash. There will be time for you on the forum yet my dear, fret nor fear.

*Editor's note: it was by sheer magic alone that I was able to get the tricky little f**er to stand with that Aile pack on after 5 pints of rum. A feat not repeated for the rest of the evening, try as we may.

Detail for DAYS. Trust me.

Also presented to me at this stage was a HG ANA Unicorn, the very same that will regrettably be given away. Arigatou Gozaimas'hita, Sensei.

The destruction of Namba had preoccupied us it would seem. By the time we arrived at Nipponbashi (Osaka's answer to Akihabara) the vast majority of the stores were shut. We had expected as much, but it had been rumoured during a previous reconnaissance mission to the area by Mecha Godzilla, Gaiking, and Rodan that a Zeon themed bar had been surveyed in the vicinity! Gadzooks! I hear you say. Jinkies perhaps? Yes indeed, a Zeon themed bar. But not before the elusive Great Mazinger was captured in a rare moment of digital imprisonment, afront a THIRTY FOOT GUNPLA ADVERTISEMENT.

*Editor's note: Unwittingly made the perfect "A" in Perfect GrAde ;D

Now at this point I make note that while I do like a good whisky and I will pound the beer until sunrise (or perhaps more realistically about 2am these days :D ), other spirits knock me for a loop. Even worse when there are a multitude of them. As a rule I don't mix drinks as it is a recipe for disasterism.

Enter the Stage: ZEON Bar.

A quaint little tavern. Quaint enough for half a dozen fully grown nuclear ooze mutated monsters, a 1/12 Zaku, and a pisser.

At this stage the recollection begins to get a bit fuzzy.. So here goes: There was mecha anime on a small TV, which later was changed to 08th MS Team to accommodate the seething monstrosities gathered at the far end of the bar.

There was a collection of many small, unusual, and rare kits displayed along the top of the bar, along with the absolute latest Unicorn kits in a stack in various stages of progress.

Master had numerous works of his own scattered around the top of the booze shelves. There was a glass cabinet contributing about 50% of the actual bar, chock full of snapped up unicorn HG's. The man was a visionary.

All I could gather with my VERY limited Japanese and his considerably better English was that he was a Sushi chef in California, and now he owned a gunpla themed bar in Osaka.

The toilet was lined with female mecha anime figures.

The patrons were Japanese salarymen who loved gunpla. Friendly dudes who were only too interested in my RG Strike and ANA Unicorn. We drank an assortment of liquor, each drink different from the last. Many of which were selected by the master himself. The only drinking snack on offer was microwaved Spam, which MGZ hit up but I refrained from.

Entertainingly, Mecha Godzilla came with a barrage of staple Gunpla questions in perfect Japanese: What is your favourite Gundam type suit? What is your favourite Zeon Type suit? What is your favourite series? Favourite UC suit et al. Every patron of the bar including the barman had multiple answers for each. Gold.

One of the kits master was nice enough to display for us:

Master was pretty eager to stay out of most pics, but more than happy to let us snap his work. Scopedog Custom Colours:

Definitely had his preshade game on lock

Detail inside the cockpit was far better than my drunken pictures could do justice.

Jeah.

10 nerd points to you for spotting Master's Red Ribbon Army T-Shirt

Hands up who does NOT want to spend an evening drinking in front of this?

I know of at least five guys that night who didn't mind.

Showing off the RG Strike

...and the ANA Unicorn

Master's custom colour Tachikoma

...with custom made AEUG decal

Flash shot. This was where I ran out of memory card for the second time, and I was too drunk to risk deleting any more family pics without risking losing something I hadn't yet backed up.

We left a damn site poorer than when we came in, but having revelled in the spoils of carnage we were content with our expenditure. By now it is time for the last train and I am starting to get well and truly messy. But was the onslaught over? Not by a damn site, friend. Next it was on to the after party, which is about where I will taper off mid senten...

A tremendously fine night indeed. Many a jaunty chuckle, many an innocent Osakan laid to waste at the hands of two terrible destructive powers. More importantly, a powerful bond is formed between the two. A bond which I am all to eager to reinforce, and expand to the other force of annihilation up in Saitama upon my return.

Two things made me feel like royalty when I was in Japan, one of them being the incredible warmth and hospitality that was shown to me by American Salaryman. Thank you, humbly and sincerely. I had a really awesome time. The other was having my ring washed every time I took a dump. The royal anus is clean, your highness.

Thanks again for showing me an awesome night ASM. I can only hope to be able to show you a time half as good should you ever come to Australia.

***Footnote***

Excerpt of an email I sent to ASM Yesterday, detailing the consequences of my colossal inebriation:

If I had gone one step further than I did I never would have made it back to Australia. I pretty much slept until check out, was drunk until First Kitchen at 3pm, and then spent an hour and a half sleeping it off in Kanku lounge at the airport. I didn't come good until today. I haven't written myself off like that in effing ages man. I was as useless as tits on a bull for the entire day. Top night. xD

:D

Osaka - I love that place from the bottom of my heart. It is fantastic to see you having a great time, day I'll show you were the partyís at. My experience is unlimited alcohol for 2 hours with karaoke followed by being near molested in a seven 11 toilet, a porn store that looked like a set piece from a harry potter movie. Hours of drunken walking meeting someone randomly I know from Melbourne followed by more drinking, walking and catching a cab to find out I was around the corner to my hostel with a bag full off 100 yen adult VHS tapes??? Man I love Osaka...

That and those royal toilets really cleans up, I miss not wipingÖ

A new zeon bar? this I must see...

A bar where they display and let you build gunpla?

I don't drink but I know where I'm going when I hit Japan! :D \m/

The RG Strike does look pretty boss. Am waiting to see what the Panda does with his kit before I decide on purchase or not.

The other kits the bar had look very cool.

LOL@Mokana. You deviant. I'm confident a night in Osaka with you would end in a pretty similar fashion, though when you have a local to show you around there is less likelihood of 100 yen adult tapes and combini toilet molestation and more likelihood of drinking with some fun and interesting locals. But only slightly.

Haha Buster glad you enjoyed it. I can assure you that you and GaiGun were there with us in spirit, and you both were frequently mentioned in conversation. Find the word "Rodan" in the OP and hover your mouse over it.

Glad you all enjoyed the post guys. I was half a sheet to the wind last night and I sat up for a good couple of hours compiling it. It was fun. I would have liked to have taken the 50 foot monster attack theme a bit further but I ran out of steam. ;D

To be honest, I couldnít have written it better.  I about busted out laughing when I saw the pictures, damn awesome work there.  I love the shot of me mixing our six pack of rum & cokes with my laser beam eyes.

Seriously thought, it was an awesome night, and again, it was great to meet up with a like mind and find out even how much more we have in common in our offline personas as well.  We will have to do some inter-dimensional warping or something to get Gaiking Sky Dragon (lol) out to Osaka the next time you are here.

Seriously though folks, the line work on that RG was exquisite, and we definitely oohed and ahhed over it at the bar.  As Great Mazinger said though, getting that thing to stand up with the Aile Pack takes a miracle that two people going from 0 to drunk in 20 bucks just canít produce.

From there, the Zeon Officerís Club just rocked.  I mean, you walk in and people arenít batting an eye when you start talking kits, suits, annoying characters, and everything and anything related to Gundam.  Not only was the Master awesome in English and friendly, the other patrons in the Zeon lounge were friendly and quick to offer up their favorite kits.  The Masterís favorite Zeon kit?  The Gouf.  One of the patrons?  The Gogg. Wow.  Talk did swing around to favorite series and someone said 08th MS Team, which lead to the DVD being put on, and straight to seeing the Gouf Custom kick ass.

But as the clock did start inching closer to midnight we decided to call it a night, but we suddenly remembered things.  1) Its Friday night and 2) even more importantly, itís Great Mazingerís last Friday night in Japan (for a while).  So we took that last train to a favorite place of mine and continued the drinking party until around 3 AM I think?  Thatís a much as I can say at this point, although I would love to see what heads GK would put on the pictures taken at the after party.

Now I will say this, the man can drink, and hide the drunkness well, because I was getting pretty blurry at the end but he kept going.  Saturday was definitely a I do not want to get out of bed at all day, so suffice it to say, and GKís mail proves it, Iím happy I didnít have to fly on an 8 hour flight with two mini-GKs, and a not so pleased Mrs. GK.

But we both know that when the ground shakes as the titans announce a battle of imbibement, we must answer the call, come heaven or hell.  For the rewards shall surely empower us to fight those daily demons and stand proud for our cause.

I skipped Osaka altogether, off the plane, straight to Kyoto. Good excuse for another trip then. Quite a sizable Aussie community in Sapporo constantly bumping identify themselves as soon as you open your mouth. mmmm..... seafood in Hokkaido.....

Love the country so many quirky places, like 2min noodle bar (with specific branding!)
Witnessed Aussie husband behaving badly (actually begging for forgiveness from boss lady after caught red handed out of an established called 'midnight cats')

Random salaryman encounter - idiot us didn't know cinema in Japan closes at like 9 - asks a random on directions coz want to watch the live action Battleship Yamato movie - who responds with plenty of hand gesturing suddenly bulb moment - "WOOO NAIGHTO SEENNIMER?? *Point Point Gesture Gesture* whilst giving us knowing winks - yep, confirmed at destination 'Private video viewing room'.

Ahaha.. Zero to drunk in 20 bucks. Nice. Apt.

Yes I was unpopular with the boss but the kids were awesome, apart from when they were jumping on me at 7am while the room was spinning.

Master had two favourite Gundam types, one was the Shining, the other a more conservative choice. Patron number 1 chose Nu Gundam. A man of taste no doubt. ;) Few and far between are public locations where gunpla is a universal language and conversation goes unexplained and uninhibited.

Great post mate. Great memories too, fragmented as they may be. ;D
