I have made a post on my blog for the donations.  And each new post will start with the donations message until further notice.  I get paid this Thursday, so expect some monetary help from me then.  Gunpla was such a great gift to me from Japan, I simply have to help.

Thanks very much guys!

Here is an interesting and grounding read about the nuclear situation which I suggest reading if it concerns you. It seems pretty sober and factual to me but I have no way of knowing for sure. I found it very informative and reassuring.

I am happy to donate 10,000 yen, however, I plan to wait for a formal plan of action to be announced by whatever organization will be helping with the relief.

Sonar, have you considered Japan Red Cross? There site isn't very responsive atm but from what I can see they don't have a formal plan in place yet. This is what they have announced they are doing:

"Japanese RC is assessing the situation in both from NHQs and Branch level.

62 NDRTs (National Disaster Response Teams) with more than 400 staffs including Doctors, Nurses, Admins sent to the affected areas for Assessment, First Aid, Health, possible PS (Psychological Support Programme) etc., some have reached and is conducting assessment, while more are on standby.

700 blankets have been distributed and some 30,560 more sent to the affected area for further distribution."

Intuitively I'd say they are the best people to donate to. Thoughts?

@Sonar:
I hope that's true, but I still feel very scared. Maybe I've been watching way too many documentaries about the Chernobyl incident.

Thanks Dom. I tend to agree but by the time a formal plan of action is announced the idea of helping those who are immediately in need is a bit redundant. The Red Cross looks great, but I think they will be receiving the majority of the donations as they are the first port of call for most people and have a very high profile, deservedly so as the work they do is critical and lifesaving in this kind of an emergency. I think if people want to donate to the Red Cross then that's what they'll do, no point in having a middle man. I'd like to take up a donation that can help right now without bureaucracy and if it turns out that the Red Cross can use it most efficiently then that's where it will go.

The Nippon Foundation is the option I'm currently looking at and it looks good to me. I think it would be a good choice personally as it ticks all the boxes - non-governmental, non-denominational, community partnered and driven, philanthropic, transparent, accountable, efficient, and effective. I think they will put our money to really good use quickly and hopefully in a way that it will benefit people who may be overlooked by the larger charities.

Take a look and let me know what you guys think. It's your money too so you should have a say where it goes.

The Nippon Foundation/CANPAN
Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund
The damage wrought by the massive earthquake that struck Northeastern Japan on March 11 has been devastating. Estimates already place those dead and missing in the thousands.

At the moment, there is little that untrained volunteers can do to help on the ground. What we all can do right now, however, is to help raise funds to support both the relief organizations currently working in the affected areas, and the extensive reconstruction work that will follow.

The Nippon Foundation has extensive experience working with local partners to provide support after disasters such as the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1997, and more recently the Mid Niigata Earthquake and Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Our work has really brought home the importance of non-governmental funding that allows civil society to respond in a timely and flexible manner.

The Nippon Foundation/CANPAN Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund will provide effective, accountable, and timely support to trusted partners working in the affected areas. To ensure the highest degree of transparency, reports on the receipt and use of funds used will be posted on The Nippon Foundation/CANPAN website.

Donations are now being accepted by credit card at 1,000 yen per share. All donations will go to the victims of the earthquake.

Please reach out and give a helping hand to those in need.(Click here to donate.)

@ Sonar, I understand what you mean, the problem is though that without a formal plan the money won't be used effectively, if at all. There have been many cases with past charities where money is donated but not used for months as they don't know how to use it. It just sits there. I know how you feel though, I wish there was a way we could give more directly.

On another note I checked out the Nippon Foundation as well, they do alot of good work. I'm happy for our donations to go to them.

Does anyone else have any objection to the Nippon Foundation? The Japanese Red Cross have offered an option for donations to be distributed directly to those affected via a direct deposit into their bank account which is what I was initially looking for. No red tape, no middle men. This may be our best option.

I just read about J-Pop star Gackt starting an appeal with proceeds going to the Red Cross, which demonstrates my point about helping out a lesser known social welfare organization. There is also a yearly telethon drive in Japan every August which will no doubt be huge this year.

A very big thank you to Gundam Guy and Z@Gunpla-Inochi for helping to give our little appeal some exposure! Your assistance is most humbly appreciated!

Other prominent Bloggers it would really mean a lot to me if you are able to offer any additional exposure, if not to us, then to the Red Cross appeal.

The donations have slowed a bit, so if you haven't gotten around to it yet please give what you can.

Here are some other options if you're looking for them:

Australian Red Cross Japan & Pacific Appeal

USA Red Cross (Have raised over 8 million already! Outstanding!)

Filipino Red Cross

Please give what you can, to whomever you want . No amount is too small and all will go towards helping these people who are hurting so badly.

I have decided that the best course of action is a 50/50 split between the Nippon Foundation and a direct bank deposit to the Japanese Red Cross. Please see the OP for details.

Keep the donations coming!

Update on the GAF Japan Quake Appeal:

We have now made the decision as to how to disperse the donations. It was basically a case of act immediately and sort out the details whilst doing it for us, so we thank you for your patience and understanding.

So far we have raised over $300 and we hope to raise much more. Thank you to those who have donated, those that have not there is still time!

Please continue to give and spread the word as much as you can.

50% of the proceeds of the GAF Appeal will be going directly to those most in need via direct bank deposit to The Japanese Red Cross

50% of the proceeds of the GAF Appeal will go to  The Nippon Foundation to help with social welfare, counselling the traumatized, and rebuilding Japan.

You can donate to the GAF Japan Quake Appeal via paypal: japanquake{at}gundamaustralia{dot}com

As an alternative there are the following options for the Red Cross:

Australian Red Cross Japan & Pacific Appeal

USA Red Cross (Have raised over 8 million already! Outstanding!)

Filipino Red Cross

Please give what you can, to whomever you want . No amount is too small and all will go towards helping these people who are hurting so badly.

Thank you for your generosity.

Ganbare Japan!

I love what is transpiring here, I personally donated to the Red Cross directly already so forgive me for not partaking here, but I still think its great what we as a community are doing here for a country that has given us so much.
