Title: 1:4000 SDF-1 Macross
Post by: MrDoom on February 25, 2015, 07:40:24 PM
Well I have been out of the game for a very long time but it was only going to be a matter of time before something popped up to drag me back in. I always loved Macross and couldn't pass up the chance to get a large size version of the SDF-1.

This will be interesting. It comes with some of the biggest decals I have ever had to work with

I already have a 1:5000 scale fully transformable SDF-1 toy. This shot gives you an idea of the scale difference. This kit will be just over 30cm when complete.

Now I have to resupply on paint, glue and other misc hobby tools. It will be a tough few days before I can make a proper start on this one.

Can't wait for you to finish this. Hase kits are awesome under the hands of a pro.

Starting to make some progress. It has been a long since I last did a "glue together" kit so I have had some challenges making sure that I get enough glue in the right places to avoid any over runs.

Interestingly this kit assembles into a series of self contained modules.

I'm scratching my head over what to do about the line work. It's too fine for any approach I would normally take

That's the forward "main gun" section of the ship.

The fit is actually really good. Most seams are concealed or on edges where the look mostly natural

This'll be a great build, I've loved Macross since I was little and can't wait to see this done up. How much was the kit worth?

Under $50 for the kit itself.

I wasn't sure it would be small enough but I got my hands on a 0.03 Copic marker and it has done a pretty good job on the line work so far.

The lines really take the kit to the next level.

Been a bit busy the past few weeks however I managed to prep most of the core body components.

By next weekend I should have the main ship body assembled.

One thing that I did find disappointing about the kit is that not all parts are cast in the correct colour. You really need to keep an eye on reference material to make sure you get things right. Some masking is also needed in a few spots to get a good finish.

The ship section is done. Everything came together well to assemble it this weekend.

The armd platforms are all I have to go.

How big's the macross now that it's all put together? I want to put it on my desk but I don't know if I've got the room for it :P

About 30cm long and 12cm wide. It would make a pretty good desk accessory imho.

Other than a few small touch ups the build is done. Next up will be the decals.

I'll post a few more pics once the last few bits are done.

Recently I completed the transformed "attack" version of the kit. Using what I learned from the ship version this one came out really nice. The most important change I did was to use a grey copic pen for the panel lines/ contrasting panels. It came out much close to the reference paint job

Looks good. I wish Hasegawa would get their finger out and release the TV version. The TV version in cruise mode followed pretty soon after the Movie version but this time nothing.
