GRUNT BUILD #5: Mission Specialists. Anything you can do I can do better!

Prep time: 28 May to 16 June.

Build time: 0800 17 June to 2000 25 27 August.

Welcome to Grunt Build #5: Mission Specialists. As the title suggests this build will encompass the ever suffering member of the squad that has extra training and equipment just so they can get their head shot off before anyone else  ;)

Mission specialists are those MS that have a slightly different load out to the run of the mill grunt. It may be as simple as a BFG to allow them to reach out and touch somebody to as elegant as a full ECM suite to play secret squirrel. From an all out close combat assault to the subtlety of blowing them into a million pieces with demolition charges.

Some suggestions are; radio man, medic, heavy weapons, demolition, sniper, assault, surveillance/ECM, underwater, transport and I'm sure many more. If you are unsure just ask.

Update 30/5/13: I think people are missing the point a bit here. A mission specialist is just a member of the squad that has a little something extra to aid in the completion of a mission. Artillery support or massive BFG's are just that, support units. They do not venture out into the battlefield as such, they tend to lurk in the background.

You can give your MS a heavy weapon or a smallish shoulder mounted missile launcher for extra firepower in a tight spot but huge backpack mounted cannons are not what this build is looking for. Have a look at the Stark Jegan & Jesta Cannon. They are about the limit for heavy weapons.

Update 31/5/13: Black Ops, False Flag or whatever other name you want to give covert operations is a mission type not a mission specialist and as such is not allowed.

Update 8/8/13: Finish date is now 8PM Tuesday 27 Aug.

Time to gather your forces starts now with the build proper to commence at 0800 (8AM) on the 17 June, finishing at 2000 (8PM) on the 25 August.

The categories for the build will be Open, Enhanced OOB & Strictly OOB.

One thing that will please the swiss army knife brigade is this build is not timeline specific. You may use any grunt suit from any timeline. If there are no objections I'd like to include vehicles as well.

Prizes: at this stage I have a number of HGUC and some non Gundam (for a change) kits for the pool and hopefully HLJ & Gentei Kits will help out as well.

On to the guidelines.

OPEN
Anything goes. Any scale, any mods, any material. The only restrictions are how the model is presented which are mentioned below in 4A.

ENHANCED OUT OF THE BOX (OOB)
This category allows for the replacement of kit parts with aftermarket detail parts. For example you can replace the kit nozzles with metal or plastic aftermarket nozzles but you cannot add additional nozzles. Kit weapons can be replaced with aftermarket/other kit weapons but you cannot add additional weapons. Small additions such as extra armour, comms gear etc are allowed but any radical departure from the original kit such as substituting back packs, heads or limbs is not allowed. Additional decals and markings are allowed as is painting and weathering. Putty can be used to fill gaps but not to reshape.

STRICTLY OOB
As the name suggests if it isn't in the box it can't be used. The model can be glued, painted (any colours) & weathered but that's it. No additional decals or markings and no mods no matter how small are allowed. Putty can be used to fill gaps but not to reshape. This category will be pretty difficult to enter as you are not allowed to do any mods so you'll have to use a kit that is already a specialist MS. Please see the bottom of the post for possible kits to use.

Build duration
There will be a build up period of three weeks to allow for entrants to gather all materials needed.
The finish time is just that, the finish time. No extensions will be allowed. If you have a slow internet connection then make allowances for it.
Build up period: 28 May to 16 June
Grunt Build #5: 0800 17 June to 2000 25 August.

Now on to the details. (Please note that some items mentioned may or may not be applicable to your chosen category. If in doubt ask.)

1. All GAF Grunt Builds are open to any forum member.

2. Kit requirements.
A] First and foremost the entry must be based on a Bandai or B-Club kit. Resin conversions from B-Club are also allowed. Limited non genuine plastic, metal or resin parts such as weapons, heads, hands, shields, nozzles or other small parts are allowed. If in doubt ask. Scratch building is allowed (Open only) as are the use of any type of decals (Bandaiís selection of decals is limited at best and some are very hard to locate these days). As there are a multitude of pirated B-Club kits around these days if you plan on using B-Club parts or kits please include a picture of the box top in your WIP.

B] As this a Grunt Build no custom MS are allowed. Any suit with Custom, Customise, Prototype, Experimental or Commander Type in the name, description or kit instructions are not eligible as a base kit. These kits share common parts with the grunt versions and those parts can be used. For example Char's MS-06S shares many parts with a standard MS-06 such as the Zaku Machinegun, Heat Hawk and most of the basic body work but you cannot use the parts that are specific to the 06S such as the lower leg thrusters and armour or the back pack. If you wish to give your MS those sort of things you must modify the standard parts to achieve it. Specific build requirements may from time to time over-ride this section but as a rule of thumb no custom MS base kits will be allowed.

Update 29/5/13: For 00, all Celestial Being MS are out as is any personalised MS such as the Tieren Taozi for example.

C] To keep things simple if the MS is referred to as Custom, Customise, Prototype, Experimental or Commander Type in the kit description, instructions or primary timeline then that's what it is regardless of what it is called in any side story or game. One MS requires specific mention as it has come up in all previous builds. The MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom is sufficiently modified from the base Gouf to be considered a custom even though it's description alludes otherwise.

Update 29/5/13: Recent research tends to support the Gouf Custom is more common than it first appeared so even though the name is misleading it will now be accepted as a Grunt Suit. Same goes for the Gouf Flight in light of the recent short film released with the 08MS Team Bluray.

3. Entry requirements.
A] To be considered an entrant you must post at least one photo in the appropriate Grunt Build topic sometime between the start & finish times. The photo must show the kit before any work is done and it must show the date it was taken in some way. Please do not start a separate topic for your WIP, make all WIP posts in the main Build topic.

B] Please make sure you understand and accept the following (overseas members especially); unfortunately due to the ridiculous prices Auspost charges for postage, a condition of entry is that if you are skilful enough to pull off a victory you accept that you will pay half the postage costs or make other arrangements to collect your prize. The winners will be notified of the cost and payment details ASAP after the results have been announced. Prizes will not be sent until payment has been received. The only time this will be waived is if the prize sponsor agrees to pick up the postage costs.

4. Presentation of finished entries.
A] Once you have finished your entry please start a new topic in Field Training titled Grunt Build #5 plus the name of your entry or kit. Once judging has been completed it will be moved to The Catapult. Finished kits can be presented as stand alone figures or in a vignette (no full blown dioramas). Stands may be used to display the figure. There are some good Bandai stands around but there are also pretty good stands from other manufacturers as well. As an example of a stand you could use the Zeon or Federation Bandai action base. If you wish to do a small scene (vignette) you could for example use the Kotobukiya Chain Bases to depict repairs or re-arming. If you are going to do a vignette just remember they are only intended to be a small scene that complements the centre piece. No Cecil B DeMill productions of Ben Hur. For example if you choose to use a chain base then make it only one panel wide by one panel high.

B] As the finished entry will be judged from photographs please follow these guidelines. This is not a photography contest so no Photoshop trickery will be tolerated. You may resize and colour correct and that is it. No fancy titles, names, fades, light effects on weapons, lens trickery to hide a poorly made model, nothing! Please photograph the model against a plain background as to prevent the background from distracting from the model and crop the picture as close as possible to eliminate any unwanted background. If you wish to present your model AFTER the judging has been completed with a bit of photo trickery thatís fine but if any shopping is detected in photos submitted for judging apart for what was mentioned above then the entry will not be judged. Also do not include any props in the photos that are not part of your finished entry. As a minimum requirement you must submit 4 shots of your finished model; front, back, left & right sides. Ideal picture size is somewhere around 1200x900 pixels. Do not submit pictures that require going to another web site. You may use the forum's additional options to attach your pictures to your topic if you like. If you submit poor quality pictures you will be asked once to provide better ones. If you do not then don't expect to do well. Feel free to highlight any mods, assembly or painted effects you have done with extra close ups. The more pictures (to a point  :)) the merrier. Remember the judges only have your pictures to go by. Poor pictures mean poor results.

5. Dates & Times.
As this is an Australian forum all times and dates are EDT. There are plenty of web sites that can convert EDT to whatever time it is in any other country.

6. Prize allocation.
Each category must have at least two finishers to be eligible for prizes (no auto winners). If you are the only finisher in your category your entry will be bumped up to the next highest category with the required amount of finishers. If this happens allowances will be made when judging.

I am in.  I would like to go into the Open with the GM III that I got from the last GB and some bits and pieces.  I will be making a medic.  Gunny, I will contact you via PM in the next couple of days.  I have an idea but want to run it by you first before I go making a goose of myself.

Edit to change to Open.

Dammit, I already started work on my MG Jesta! Augghh...

Allright, I'll see what I can work out just before the date--either a kit I currently have that's not yet been touched, or else I'll end up picking up a new grunt just for this reason. Will tell closer to the date. Heck, since it's not UC-specific I might end up butchering a Vagan MS from AGE...

Put me down for Open. I use so many bits and random pieces I'll never sneak past with just OOB...

Sorry to be the first one to bother you as usual but how about the "Specail Operations" Jesta Cannon? Is that elligible for the "open" Catagory? :)

The box says: "Special Operations Heavy Assault Mobile Suit", which doesn't really clear anything up.

Both MAHQ and the Gundam Wikia page refer to it as a prototype, and apparently only one exists.

The magic word is "prototype". Which means that the next magic word is probably a "no". ;) This suit falls in a similar category as the Gouf Custom. It's Mr. Gunny's call, at the end of the day, though.
Title: Re: GRUNT BUILD #5: Mission Specialists. Anything you can do I can do better!
Post by: thegunny on May 29, 2013, 04:02:11 PM
I haven't watched the last episode of Unicorn so I'm not familiar with how many there supposedly are. If you can believe MAHQ there are 3 pilots so if there is only one Jesta Cannon then it must be pretty chummy in the cockpit :o As the normal Jesta has the same designation and was allowed in the last build then I can't see any reason to not allow the Cannon version. Prototype is not mentioned in the Bandai description of the MS so until someone can point out where in the instructions it is refered to as a prototype it can be used.

I've done some further digging on the subject of our perennial favourite the Gouf Custom and it would appear that it shows up in other hands than just Norris Packard and is in fact just another variant of the Gouf albeit with a rather misleading name. The new short film that came with the 08MS Team Bluray set also casts some doubt on the rarity of the Gouf Flight type as well. After what I've found and seen I'm inclined to let both the Gouf Custom & Gouf Flight in if there are no objections.

@flamingeyebrows: After all your Pommy impersonations you did I finally give you the option to use swiss army knives and you ask about a UC MS. WTF!!!  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Teehehehe I am gonna assume 'pommy impersonations' means whinging instead of penchant for queues. :P Sorry to be the annoying thorn in your side but I never said I would build a non-UC suit.

Quote
I mean I am a uc fan boy as well but those who want to build some alternate universe suits should be allowed.

See, I was being a devil advocate/ campaigner for minority rights. :P

I am actually considering non UC suits as well though. It's just that the new Jesta cannon look sooo good. If I go with Jesta Cannon, I still might build a non-UC suit according to the guide lines without entering it as penance for all the grief I caused you with my questions. :)

You mention transport. Does a 'mechanic' (for want of a better word) classify as a specialist as Im considering an open entry around a retrieval/fix'em up/chop shop idea.

Is a false flag decoy ok as a specialist?

Also do 2 unbuilt kits need to be used or can 1 be shown ie the frame with the victim which is to be broken down for scrap? Thanks.

False flag (or black flag) describes covert military or paramilitary operations designed to deceive in such a way that the operations appear as though they are being carried out by other entities, groups or nations than those who actually planned and executed them. Operations carried during peace-time by civilian organisations, as well as covert government agencies, may by extension be called false flag operations if they seek to hide the real organisation behind an operation.

So in other words it just some tosser video game terminology for a standard military practice that has been used since the beginning of warfare  ::) ::) ::)

I'm sorry I don't really understand what you are asking. What does a decoy operation have to do with breaking down a frame for scrap?

I am reading the Wiki article and it is quite interesting.  One of these actions was apparently responsible for the greatest recorded loss of life on an Australian warship. (I don't know about the voracity of these claims because I am not any kind of military historian). Given that it seems that to be considered "legal" in war you must be wearing the false flag must be dis-guarded before engaging.

It was done all the time during WWI & II. German naval raiders and The Battle of The Bulge are perfect examples. At the bulge the Germans had the Yanks totally flummoxed and shooting at each other when they disguised their troops as US Military Police. The only down side is that if you get caught it's the firing squad, no questions asked.

Is a false flag decoy ok as a specialist?

Also do 2 unbuilt kits need to be used or can 1 be shown ie the frame with the victim which is to be broken down for scrap? Thanks.

I think what proto is trying to ask for is the requirement of using parts from other kits to spruce up the kit intended for submission. As per requirement, the for-part-kits (victim) must be of mass produced nature (naturally). Does it need to be a new kit or can we salvage the parts from other built kits.

Anyway, gunny, can I try to be silly and submit a flamethrower zaku using the HGUC Zaku Marine as base?

I'd say not. It's not the standard configuration of a squad to have a cross dresser (on duty anyway  ;)). A covert or undercover or what ever you want to call operative is not what I would consider as part of a standard squad/unit make up.

Short answer: No secret agents  :)

Anyway, gunny, can I try to be silly and submit a flamethrower zaku using the HGUC Zaku Marine as base?

What category? In open you can fill your boots, in Enhanced OOB you'll be limited to substituting the Mariner's weapon for something that looks like a flamethrower and in Strictly OOB I'd say it's not possible unless their is a flamethrower Zaku lurking in an old MSV kit somewhere.

Ok, I've decided to sleep in the bed I helped make. I am gonna make a heavy cannon/artillery support 'Adele'.
http://gundam.wikia.com/wiki/RGE-G1100_Adele
Pretty sure it's a grunt.

Also, can we salvage parts from non-grunt suits? I am not giving it BFG Gundam weapons or anything, I just want to salvage the missile pods from the HG Heavy Arms so I don't have to buy kits for the purpose of cannibalizing it.

I am gonna make a heavy cannon/artillery support 'Adele'.

I think people are missing the point a bit here.

In light of this Gunny, I have thought about my build and I will change what I am doing slightly.  I will stick with medic, but will scrap the idea I had since it isn't really a squad member so much as a specialist position off the field of battle.  Now that I am in Open I will stay there, for simplicity. :)  Entry will be a field medic HGUC Ball.

A mission specialist is just a member of the squad that has a little something extra...

One thing I'm unsure of: If I take two kits and kitbash them together to create the 'base' kit I want before modding it into Combat specialist...would that be an issue?

EG I take an HGUC Zaku and a ZZ Gundam Desert Zaku and combine the two. Then, AFTER combining the two together I modify it into the desired kit for entry. Would that count as okay, or is that falling under the "Way too much work for what you plan to compete for" category? :(

This would actually be my first build for something like this gunny. I was wondering if a M-1S Astray Strike with a Perfect Strike pack in black ops colours would be acceptable for it
Title: Re: GRUNT BUILD #5: Mission Specialists. Anything you can do I can do better!
Post by: thegunny on May 31, 2013, 01:13:29 PM
The M1 Astray is okay  :) but not the back pack from the Perfect Strike. The Perfect Strike is a prototype. Nothing stopping you from tweaking the back pack on the M1. Just remember that if you do massage the back pack to any great extent you will have go into open.

What are you going to do as it's specialty? Black Ops has already been discussed and is not a mission specialist.

Black Ops, False Flag or whatever other name you want to give covert operations is a mission type not a mission specialist and as such is not allowed.

Okay--this is subject to change closer to the date, but I'm eyeing a 1/144 Zaku/Desert Zaku Combat Engineer.

Specifically an actual Combat engineer--the guys who do bridgelaying, demolitions, mine-clearing etc. Is that within the rules?

Not sure if Combat Engineer is too specific--or if it's too much of a catch-all term (EOD, Demolitions, etc are also sort-of within the "Combat engineer" description, I think)
Title: Re: GRUNT BUILD #5: Mission Specialists. Anything you can do I can do better!
Post by: thegunny on May 31, 2013, 08:23:05 PM
Can't see anything wrong with that.

EOD & Demolitions is pretty much the same (or at least it was when I did it). IED is very different and pretty specialised and not what you'd expect in a normal squad.

You could always do an irish mine detector  ;D

LOL Gunny. Now you're tempting me to make my Desert Zaku entry do THAT EXACT POSE! :D

...Seriously, the only reason I'm saying 'subject to change' is because I'm hoping to grab a 1/144 Desert Zaku before then and an HGUC Zaku (Not specific which, as long as I can use it as a base). If I'm lucky, that's exactly what I'll build. If not, I'll work something out. It's just that this month's really busy...

Title: Re: GRUNT BUILD #5: Mission Specialists. Anything you can do I can do better!
Post by: thegunny on June 09, 2013, 08:17:02 AM
A frayed knot  :( Whilst the ReZel is indeed a Grunt MS and could form the basis of a specialist in Open or Enhanced OOB it doesn't have any attributes that would make it suitable for Strictly OOB. Strictly OOB is just that, whatever is in the box and paint. nothing more. The ReZel kit is a basic version so without mods does not fit the build as a specialist. The kits I put in the list are those that can be built straight out of the box that have specialist abilities that fit within the build requirements.

Newbie questions here:  Would a HGUC MS-18E Kampfer qualify for the OOB category?  Also, can you change categories during the build?  For example:  I start as a strictly OOB build, but I finish as an OOB enhanced build.  Finally, you state that "To be considered an entrant you must post at least one photo in the appropriate Grunt Build topic sometime between the start & finish times."  Does that mean I post one photo of the unbuilt kit with proof of date in this thread before starting my separate build thread?

Great banners by the way!

Thanks, and looking forward to starting!

The Kampfer is a bit of a grey area. All the web sites call it a prototype but as it's not called a prototype on the box or the instructions it's okay as far as I'm concerned.

You are not locked in to a category until you submit your finished build.

I thought 3 [A] was pretty clear  :-\ No WIPs, post your build along with your start pic in this topic and start a new topic only for your finished entry  :)

My entry is not in the running for prizes, I'm just along for the ride. I'll be doing an RGM-79[G]GM. The plan is to do it as a CQB/Assault specialist. I've got a few goodies from Koto & Bandai to beef it up and various decals to complete the make over. At this point I'll be sticking with the Bandai colour scheme.

Best of luck everyone and remember that all bribes are to be in non sequential notes in a brown paper bag  ;D

Side by side on a block of wood! Nothing else, just the models! May mount them on rods to emulate the pose on the snipers box (there is a canon in it as well if you look hard enough!)

Nothing more than that as I dont have the drive to dio this one as Im working on two largish dios at the moment!

My WIP pic of my progress so far.  Snapped together and test fitted.  I would have been faster if I didn't have such a busy week.  Now its time to attend to the seems and surface prep as I re-plan my original ideas for painting the kit.  I'm also quite impressed with its size and movability for a HG 1/144 kit since I only built MGs and a few SDs in the past.  Go Grunts!
Title: HGUC MS-18E Kampfer - Strictly OOB
Post by: jbutler on June 23, 2013, 09:28:44 AM
Here is my entry for the group build.  Will probably be going Strictly OOB, but I would like to use some aftermarket decals.  So, I may end up in Enhanced OOB.  Not sure of the color scheme.  May go with a desert grunt on this one.  Definitely some weathering.

Not sure whats going on guys but i cant upload the photos for my entry. I am doing a strictly OOB MBF-M1 Astray  Close Quarters/Squad Pointman build.

You need an off site host such as Photobucket or just use the additional options, attach function.

If you use the additional options function under no circumstance make the photos bigger than 3200x1800 (no need for them to be that big anyway) or you will make a lot of people very unhappy as it will crash the topic.

As the M1 Ashtray is just that an M1 Ashtray, how do you plan to depict a specialist whilst staying Strictly OOB? You cannot give it anything that doesn't come in the box and I'm afraid a paint job doesn't qualify it as a specialist. The kits listed for OOB use are specialist variations of the standard version that can be built OOB. The M1 with improvements will happily fit into Enhanced but it just doesn't fit into Strictly OOB for this particular build.

The Loto twin set comes with some parts that I thought were coms gear (shoulder mounted box thingy).  I could be wrong, I frequently am.  You also might look at the vulcans from the Mk II.  I built the HG recently, and the vulcans put me in mind of a set of headphones.

All good assault specialists need a grenade launcher, a shotgun, a sub machinegun, some smoke launchers, a last resort pistol, a shield and a big long pointy thing.

Asbestos undies would help as well  :)

Did you do a risk assessment before putting on those undies?  Do you have a Safe Work Method Statement for the way you put them on>  Oh you put them on right leg then left leg, not left leg then right leg as in the procedure.  We will have to give you an infringement notice :D

Stalled with the Group Build, might bring it over to Mech Workshop and get some ideas.

Currently snapping together a Zaku Mariner and am tempted to do something....stupid with it.

Something involving yellow rubber ducks.

To those people who are wanting to meet this girl Hawk105th was talking about...... That girl is me and if anyone is interested we are dating.....  I was planning on entering this comp... My idea is a Psy op Nemo. This nemo will be painted in pink camo colours and will have a free hug sign on it's shield and a flower coming out of its gun.... I will also put some speakers on the shoulders and extra antennas on it..... somewhere.....

The Black Tristars MS-06R-1A is classified as a mass produced version so is okay. The Shin Matsunaga is classified as a custom so it's not.

We've already covered the body guard issue and it's not a squad specialist, so going on that I'd have to say the Guard's Type is not eligible for Strictly OOB.

- The Matsunaga version still contains some of the bits for the 'regular' version, But just stick with the TriStars version to be on the safe side. There should be plenty available still.

The Black Tristars MS-06R-1A is classified as a mass produced version so is okay. The Shin Matsunaga is classified as a custom so it's not.
-I think the only really distinct parts are the hands (Matsunaga Zaku has knuckles), right shoulder (Matsunaga's has vents on his right arm), and the legs (which are very different from the TriStars version). And maybe the front skirt. I don't have the Tri-stars version, though, so I can't do a proper comparison between the two.

The guidelines that were decided on to keep things simple are pretty straight forward. They were done that way so intimate knowledge of the kit differences is not really needed. It's all in the name  :)

Quote

C] To keep things simple if the MS is referred to as Custom, Customise, Prototype, Experimental or Commander Type in the kit description, instructions or primary timeline that's what it is regardless of what it is called in any side story or game. One MS requires specific mention as it has come up in all previous builds. The MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom is sufficiently modified from the base Gouf to be considered a custom even though it's description alludes otherwise.

Update 29/5/13: Recent research tends to support the Gouf Custom is more common that it first appeared so even though the name is misleading it will now be accepted as a Grunt Suit. Same goes for the Gouf Flight in light of the recent short film released with the 08MS Team Bluray.

There's more action in the local cemetery than this build  :-\

I'll dust off a corpse and see what happens. I've had a bit of a change of plan. I was going to do this in original colours but I've had to resort to brush painting as the weather is not doing my airbrush any favours at the moment. I've used two shades of green, as brush painting orange and buff is near on impossible. I was a bit worried about painting green over the orange parts but it turned out okay.

Now on with the weapons and internals.

All part of the experiment Gunny Sir.  I'm sure the colour will work out with the finial paint scheme.

As for the spray mask, its one of those odour masks that has carbon or charcoal fibres in it to help with paint/solvent fumes.  The one I'm using is a newish JFY 1111 P1 valve dust mask.  So no I did not inhale a whole lot of black paint  ;D

How do you tell when the mask is no good if it's already black?

One month down and the action is about as hot as the inside of a liquid nitrogen flask  :-\

On the face of things Strictly OOB is going to be a non starter unless a few more people sign up (this was always going to be a bit of a difficult category given the nature of the build). Progress in the other two categories has at least risen slightly above Zero Kelvin. Makes you wonder why so many people wanted the build to go for 3 months  ??? ??? 11 weeks of thinking I've got plenty of time then one week of panic and thinking up excuses  :o

5 and a bit weeks to go  :)

Naughty Epi  :P I'll be the nice one this time  :o

It's the MG RGM-79 [G]. It shares a lot of parts with the RX-79 kit and is identical to the GM Sniper except the sniper has the power cell and Ransel to power the sniper rifle. They all come with butt load of weapons and if you have them all like I do, you end up with enough weapons to arm a small army (lots of arms in there  ;))

For an early kit (Jul 2001) it's quite good and apart from the weapons the only seams that need fixing are two small ones on the top of the shoulders where the front and rear body halves join and two small ones either side of the head. There are two more on the neck but you could get away without fixing them as they are mostly covered by the head and seeing as Bandai only seem to be able to do ver2.0 Zaku variants they are as good as it gets for the lowly GM variants.

Ok... I'm joining this one a bit late... HG Mobile Ginn ... Kinda thinking something along the lines of the formation aircraft from ww2... They were brightly painted and were used to allow the bomber formation to form before returning home... Whilest the main bomber formation attacked Germany... They were actually unarmed and only had one job ....

well ... look at the history of battles ... D-Day classic example, a formation of aircraft flew toward Calais in such a way that it looked like a ship convoy ... this was used to confuse the germans radar and cause the germans to consider the real invasion fleet as a decoy - okay alot more behind this bit of history, however if you want your enemy to look in another direction, give them something to look for ... thus a specialist trooper could be sent in a different direction to the main force and send out electronic signals to make it appear it was a larger real force ... so i might have to make some Mods to give the Ginn some extra features ... Consider it the reverse of the Sparkvark/Prowler/Growler which jam enemy radars from detecting incoming aircraft ... and like our US comrads, paint the Mech in some outlandish colour scheme ...

PM answered :D

Hey Everyone,

Cobra -- you're making me feel like I'm not so far behind!

I put my Marine Zaku on hold and began the Kampfer.  Cracked the box yesterday.  (I know, I know.  Less than a month to go.) Built up the sub-assembies  for painting.  Primed the weapons this morning and will begin battle damage this afternoon, after I watch the F1 race.  Going to go with a desert theme I think.

Doesn't look like much.

I got aftermarket decals for it, so I guess I'm out of the "strictly OOB" category and into the "enhanced OOB.  It was getting lonely in there anyway!

Good luck on your builds.  Will be posting again soon.

Late runners added to front page. Time is over rated. A true nerd only needs a few days  ;D

@ Matt723: In the second pic that Lotto looks like a Battletech Clan Galahad with the big radar dish head and twin Gauss Rifles.

@ jbutler: nice product placement  :D Is Coke paying you well  :P

Where are the other usual suspects  ???

Shaid, Fury, Hemish, flamingeyebrows, Mangyver5223.

Painting.  Going with the desert theme.  One question, what do you guys like to use for a general weapon color?  My go to color is usually Tamiya gun metal or light grey, but I'm getting a little bored of those.  Also, is there anything else I can use for the mono-eye, rather than the pink sticker??

You could try Mr Hobby burnt iron and a very clever person suggested to me to colour mono eyes and such with a red sharpie. It stays clear but looks pretty hot.

Tamiya metal grey is another alternate colour to use for weapons too. Its fine and doesn't have the grain that Tamiya gunmetal has.

Try using a combination of Gun Metal, Metallic Grey, and other colors that you would expect in a gun.
Say for example, do the barrel and most of the small firing bits in Gun Metal, Use Metallic Grey for the magazine and other bits like the scope. Then use a color of your choice (preferably matching your MS camo scheme) for the gun's outer casing.

Check out some real-world firearms and use those as inspirations. A good example:

Update on the prize front.

Sonar will be handing out the HGUC Nu Gundam Ver.GFT as an encouragement award.

Still undecided on the two sets of RG Destiny Light Effects parts. Will wait and see how the finished entries pan out first. May possibly look at something along the lines of best paint job, most innovative mods etc.

My entry is complete.  Not sure how I feel about it yet.  I learned a lot from this build but I am not sure how I feel about my end result.

I'm sure we'll love your balls long time  :)

Ok.  I have the Kampfer painted, battle damaged and gloss coated.  I am going to wash and panel line tonight.  Then decals.  I have these:

(http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d171/lawman362000/decals.jpg) (http://s35.photobucket.com/user/lawman362000/media/decals.jpg.html)

My question is, where do I place the decals?  With the kit, there are only three or four stickers provided, so that is no help.  On the decal sheet, it looks as if there are a couple for the Kampfer specifically and a bunch of small red information decals at the bottom of the sheet.  Anyone used this sheet before?  Do I just wing it and place them where they look good?  Thanks for any help you can give me.  Compared to the RG kits, these HGUC kits have no markings at all!

Thanks for any help you can give me.

John

2 weeks to go if anyone is interested  :-\

Nearly finished mine. Think I went the wrong way with the colour scheme. It looks a bit boring but it's too late now  :(

The rotten weather I've been having the last few months is making things hard, I'm getting a bit sick of brush painting everything, especially the top coat. Hopefully once it gets a bit more dirtied up it won't look so crap  ??? Just as well I'm only along for the ride as I reckon I'd be lucky to come last if i was going for the prizes  ::)

A place in the US called Starship Modeller. http://starshipmodeler.biz/shop/index.cfm/category/186/nose-art-and-cheesecake-decals.cfm (http://starshipmodeler.biz/shop/index.cfm/category/186/nose-art-and-cheesecake-decals.cfm)

Great place for a lot of non mainstream goodies. Good service but unfortunately with the monumental increase in USPS prices for OS postage through no fault of his own has become a bit on the pricey side.

As this build draws to a close let me take a moment to emphasize the need for good pictures of your finished work. I can only judge your work by the pictures you present. Poor pictures or one's that either overemphasize or cover up your finishing techniques will not do you any favours. Avoid flash if you can and take your photos against a neutral background such as blue or grey.

A few mobile phone shots of the model next to your keyboard won't cut the mustard. To me that shows that you just don't care. Please don't ruin what could be a winning entry by crappy pictures.

As mentioned in the starting post I will be letting people repost pictures if they are not up to scratch.

I must say I'm a bit disappointed in people's WIP's or lack thereof. Part of being in a group build is to share progress not just go Tah Dah! and flop it out at the end of the build. I did have some prizes for those WTF moments during the build but it looks as if they will have to go back in the box for another day  :-\

Seeing as everyone is playing secret squirrel and not putting up any WIPs (or very little info in the WIPs) can you please highlight what mods and techniques you might have done or used when you post your final build so I don't miss anything.

I'd hate for anyone to have spent hours on some technique or mod only to loose it in the photos and me not pick it up then be bummed off that they didn't get any credit for it.

I think I'm running out of time and also in response to Gunny's comments on WIP's, here be an update on my build so far.

The first pic is of all the amour pieces primed after making new panel lines and being sanded.  I then decided I wanted to try out a camo paint job so I've laid down some sky blue, then made little designs with blue tack and my fine tweezers.  The last pic is of the next layer of camo to be designed and then painted over the medium blue with blue.

Hopefully all going well I will be spray some gloss clear then start on the panel lines and decals.  Been a good mission so far  ;)

I'm am fully burning time since there's less than 6 days left, and I fully intend of getting this guy finished.

I've been done for a little bit, but I'm just taking my time with the extended deadline.  I went a bits nuts with my base, But I don't think its over the top for a vignette.
I'm taking my pictures now, they should be up by the end of the week.

Almost done.

I've tried to depict a well used and little cleaned city fighter. It's mainly got grime, concrete and brick dust with a little bit of mud and dirt. I've kept the rust mainly to the bolt on plates as that's where most of the water and other nasties would gather. I've kept the battle damage to the torso at a minimum as that's what the shield's for. Hands are all that's left now, I always stuff up and forget to do the hands until everything is done and they end up looking a bit different to the rest of the kit. ::)

Thanks to all those that finished and to those that at least took the time to withdraw. A bit of a mixed bag this time around. Good to see some new faces and also good to see some impressive improvement from some of the regulars. results will be up sometime tonight.

Without further ado here are my thoughts on the builds. The order they are in is the order in which you entered. The final results will be posted below.

zenma5ter
Open. HGUC Flame Thrower Zee Zulu

Another slick zenma5ter build. Cast iron effect is pretty good. Pity you run out of glue. A couple of glaring things that drop it down a notch are the perfect OOB look of the power conduits and the joints. I would like to have seen some heat effects on the cast iron finish, I reckon that would have set if off nicely. Well done.

Jimmy The Guz
Enhanced OOB. HGUC RGM-79SP Sniper.

Pretty good effort all things considered. Camo is interesting and for the most part well applied. Markings are unique. Canít say Iíve ever seen a fat arsed chook on a Gundam before. Mini Me matches well as do the other bits and pieces which brings me to the only real criticism Iíve got (apart from the less than ideal pictures), thereís just way too much blue. Itís blue overload. The detail of the kit is lost as nothing really stands out. A bit of contrast here and there like the joints, barrels and nozzles in black or gunmetal would have broken it up a bit.

Epimethius
Open. HGUC RB-79 Medic Ball.

First up I have to ask why you stayed in open after youíd changed your mind about what you were going to do because I canít see any mods at all. As Sonar said unless the medics are conscientious objectors they usually do carry weapons. It was good to see you attempt something outside your comfort zone and I hope this little hiccup doesnít put you off attempting this sort of thing in the future.

Xenomorph
Open. RGM-79C Type C.

This is a step up from the last build  :) Nice collection of mods topped off with a pretty good paint job. Pity you weren't a bit more verbose and talked up you mods a bit. I had a hard time telling where some of them were. A couple of nit picks. A few areas are bit on the clean side compared with the rest of the kit and I reckon a panel wash of light brown or darkish grey would have set it off just right. The barrels could have been a bit dirtier as gatlings make a hell of a mess when they arc up and one other thing that really stands out is the bores on the barrels really need to either be drilled out or blacked out. All in all good stuff.

Matt723
Enhanced OOB.

Another step up from the previous build. Well done  ;D Your painting and weathering are certainly moving in the right direction. Mods are nice and subtle. Would have liked to see some markings on it but itís no big deal. Base is good but itís pushing it for size. For future Grunt Builds 2/3ís that size is the max. Once again, nice work. Keep it up.

tristan
Enhanced OOB. MSV GM Guncanon & GM Sniper.

The concept was good but it just didnít quite make it. Thanks for putting in the effort; those old kits can be a real bastard at times. I know youíre not happy with it so weíll just leave it at that and look forward to your next old school extravaganza  :D

Hawk105th
HG MBF-M1 Astray.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate for your first build. A good starting effort. The colour scheme whilst eye catching lacks detail. A black panel wash or black panel lining would have brought it to life. Pity about getting the wrong size thrusters as I reckon the smaller ones would have been the ticket. Speaking of thrusters, they really need to be painted, even if itís just a quick slap of black. All the nice detail in them is lost by leaving them unpainted. I liked what you did with this and Iím sure you will only get better. Also you can take the credit for using the first non UC MS despite all the moaning from other quarters.

Now on to the results  :)

Strictly OOB didn't get out of the box  ;) so no results there.

Enhanced OOB had four entries so it has a full field of prizes.

1st: Matt723. His Loto numbers came up  ;D

2nd: Jimmy The Guz. The Sniper with the Blue Suede Shoes  ;)

3rd: Hawk105th. Goes to show what swiss army knives can do  :P

Open only had three entries so only 1st and 2nd get a gong.

1st: Xenomorph. BFG for the win.

2nd: zenma5ter Hot stuff.

The Gentei Kits.com encouragement award of the Nu Gundam Ver.GFT goes to someone who had the earth move beneath his feet during the build. They salvaged their entry from the rubble, dusted it off and kept on building (not quite so dramatic but you get the drift  ;)) From the land of the long white cloud and where men are men and sheep are scared; Jimmy The Guz.

Can all winners please check out the first page and PM me what prize you want ASAP. Please include your address so I can work you share of the postage. Once they have claimed their prize I will PM the next in line.

Once again thanks to all the finishers  :ga:

Thanks Gunny for the kind words and advice on what I could have done better on my entry.  I've learnt a lot from this build and have many more plans for my next build.

Congrats to everyone who participated  :)

Congratz to all.  I honestly forgot that I was in Open, or I would have asked to be dropped down Oops.  There are a couple of other builds going on around the interwebs that I have entered and I am certainly not put off.  As I said I learned a lot from this build and as a wise man once said "Failure isn't failure if a lesson from it's learned".  I learned how not to do many things :)
