Title: Stores to buy gunpla/plamo in Melbourne
Post by: Wolfman X on May 22, 2011, 04:43:00 PM
Since the original list in GAF have been swallowed by the interwebs I figured Ill make one to replace the original list but making this one specifically for Melbourne.

CBD:

Minotaur
121 Elizabeth Street
http://www.minotaur.com.au/
-Sells not just gunpla but anything anime related and ALOT of pop culture stuff

Ozanimart
Level 7
705/258 Lt. Bourke St
http://www.ozanimart.com.au/
-Gunpla, sometimes a number of other plamo kits, nice amount of anime stuff

Hearns Hobby
295 Flinders Street
http://www.hearnshobbies.com/
-Small list of gunpla and their stock changes from time to time due to them picking whatever and you got to be lucky to score what you want. Otherwise theres other model kits from military to cars and also hobby supplies

Victorian Hobby Center
1st/21 Swanston Street
http://www.vichobbycentre.com.au/page19279/HoldingPage.aspx
-Good amount of gunpla and a small amount of anime related stuff. Other kits there for sale as well as hobby supplies including MIG pigments which ive only know this store sells so far

Animasia
99 Grattan Street
-Big selection of gunpla and other plamo ive seen thus far as well as anime related goodies. 1st time going into there and i went absolutely bonkers by their selection

One Stop Anime
235 Bourke Street Shop 15, Tivoli Arcade
-very small collection of gunpla but somewhat reasonably priced. Lots of sd gunpla and other plamo though.

Hobby Place
280 - 282 Lonsdale Street
-My overall evaluation. Collection of gunpla and its ridiculously overpriced. Ng 1/100 @ 90-120 aud and hg at 55-70. Paints are cheap however. Owner told me to either buy something or get out and i was in there for just 2 minutes... Blah that felt more horrible then at i thought

Alternate Worlds:
Unit 11 / 13 Malvern Street, Bayswater, 3153
http://www.alternateworlds.com.au/
-Apparently these fellas sell plamo, unsure about gunpla

Moemall:
324-328 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, Australia 3000
http://www.moemall.com/
-sells anime related good and model kits. Was told they would be stocking up when i went there on their opening day. Havent went there since but i should do that one day

Add more information, Hearns Hooby and Ozanimart have very limited amount of Gunpla. Akiba Hobby will have more than Hearns Hobby but still limited. Minotaur price will be high.  The best place is still Animasia with large range of stock in Melbourne city..  (cannot believe town city like adelaide have more gunpla to sell than melbourne..)

both hearns hobby, ozanimart and akiba hobby have decent amount of gunpla from time to time but hearns hobby tend to bring in a random amount of gunpla and in different varieties. minotaurs prices varies and ive find them cheap from time to time. i shall leave it as it is unless anyone has other places to add or im told by the likes of sonar and GOZ to do otherwise as he knows more then i do in terms of gunpla stores in melbourne

The last time I was in Melbourne, One Stop Anime in Tivoli Arcade had a fair selection of Gunpla. They even had a jumbo grade RX-78-2. They also had quite a lot of Gundam markers that the other shops didn't have.

while you are there, to the east of Bourke St there is another store in Mid-city centre that has got Gunpla mechs, again limited stock but it was one place I know I can find gundam 00 mechs (sorry can't remember the store name) plus there is a store called Anime Zone which also stock up with Gunpla (location Unknown, saw them at Japan Festival)

Victorian Hobby Centre have got a good range of Gunpla at not bad prices, picked up the RX-77-2 Guncannon there a few weeks ago.

Hobby place have a few kits but they are well overpriced and the guy is a douche.

Is Hobby Japan still around? Or Animezone?
Title: Re: Stores to buy gunpla in Melbourne
Post by: Wolfman X on May 23, 2011, 12:03:10 PM
hobby japan closed down indefinitely which mokana man told me about. animezone also closed shop which was in boxhill but the guy ( scott) has an ebay shop as well as comes to events like supanova and manifest to sell his stuff.
and a small tidbit, akiba hobby in boxhill did use hobby japan name as their shop name :)

I saw Animezone at Supanova recently so I thought he may be still around. I remember buying many kits from him when I first started building but then everyones prices went down but his stayed the same so I went elsewhere.

Not to be the trollin' arse hole but you missed Hobby Place on Lonsdale Street which will be followed by a warning of do not shop there. The owner is nasty and the stock is over priced with little of special interest. He buys his stock from HLJ and charges 20%+ there prices plus shipping. Also knowing one of his former employees he is an abusive boss and recently closed half of his store.

yeah GOZ mentioned it before and i was inclined to add it due to bad reviews from the joint not only by you lot but by others who had bad experience with them. you know what though, im gonna test this guys resolve as a customer shouldnt be treated with disrespect and i wouldnt mind seeing what this stores collection is like. also ill be checking that joint in tivoli arcade area coz i also wanna see what they offer. but we shall see

man is there any stores which sells gunpla out west?? lol

Dude at hobby place is a bit of a gremlin but I buy all my paint there as it's just down the street from my girls work and we now get along fine and have a joke when I go in there... Would never buy a kit from him cause like said before way over priced but the guy is not all bad....

Think the turning point was when he asked me what I paint and I showed him a couple of pics of the Gouf I did..... He was like wow you spend slot of time on this

Since then he is ok to me anyway :)

Hobby place has the cheapest paint price in the city but the Gunpla price is totally overprice.  They selling non-grade 1/100 seed kits in MG or even PG price..

Went into Victorian Hobby Centre on Swanston St today.

Was pleasantly surprised!

Turns out on a Sunday a guy works there called Glen who's in charge of the Gundam section (he also got 2nd place at the recent expo with his Green Frame Astray), and he's planning to expand the Gundam section a bit more. Gundam's aren't badly priced either. We had a bit of a chat. My missus got a little bored. >_>

Oh, and Tamiya TS-cans are $11.95. They've got Alclad II's aswell.

Also went into Hobby Place on Lonsdale. Man he's a grumpy bugger. >_>

WOAH hold up, Akiba Hobby closed down? I knew he was having trouble holding up his store but damn...this is sad ><

Vic Hobby Centre is my new place to buy gunpla though considering their range has increased A LOT since last month haha

I can also recommend Vic Hobby Centre. The two times I've been in there I've had great service. Much better than Mr Grumpy McGrumpy-Arsehole in a particular store on a street that rhymes with "Tronsdale"...

yeah the joint has closed but the guy wills till be prepping up a store at manifest just that he wont be having the range of stuff like gunpla like he used to.

shaid, not to be rude but those who have went to that store knows what hes like. ive posted it up on what the store owner is like no need to repeat it over and over. as much as i dislike the fella, we as a community have to show some form of decency here. just dont go to his store if you dont like the owner or the prices of gunpla. theres other stores which caters better prices. just saying though
Title: Re: Stores to buy gunpla/plamo in Melbourne
Post by: GS_Zaku2 on August 19, 2011, 01:21:49 AM
It is better to at least have their store on the list cause there might be something that you might not be able to find in any on the Gunpla stores. Yes we do have some grumpy store holders/owners. But if you show respect to them they will tone down and befome friendly. I have had the same feeling at VHC long time ago and now I am well known by the staff and they have a nickname for me cause of my duel interests of railway and GUNPLA. lol

By having these store names and locations it helps many GUNPLA people to go and buy more mecha for their collection, or building sets. As I said before Wolfman you're great for doing this.  :D

Post by: kiickz on March 17, 2013, 02:05:12 PM
Hey guys,
I live in geelong near melbourne and am not sure where i can buy paints for the airbrush. I can only go to shops in Melbourne city and chinatown, most other places are too out of reach for me. Does anyone know where i can buy these paints? Much appreciated

Mod edit: merged with Gundam/Plamo in Melbourne topic. Most of the shops listed have paints of various brands.

Hello? Anyone still around?

I recently got into gunpla and was wondering if someone can update this list for me? I've only been in some stores in the cbd but want to explore other stores.

On a side note does anyone know if there are any stores in Meblbourne that sell zoid kits? I know they are hard to get but if anyones know plz list!

Metro on Swanson St

Hearns on Flinders near the station

Andrew's Hobbies at Deer Park

Don't know if there is a distributor for Kotobukiya in Australia so the Zoids kits could well be only what the shops bring in themselves.

Just to let everyone know, this list needs updating. Minotaur is overpriced, but great for other anime stuff. Very low stock. Metro Hobbies has decent prices and the best range in the CBD by far. Hearts Hobbies has a varied but small selection but a bit on the expensive side. I haven't been there, but I've seen nothing but negative reviews about animasia. One stop anime is my personal choice, the owners a nice guy, the prices are awesome and they have P-Bandai and exclusive kits, as well as Gundam markers, DVDs and converge/assault kingdom/gashapon. I don't know much about any other stores, but that's a start.

I can only say for the Melbourne Area, and I'll name-drop the newer ones first:

One Stop Anime is the place to go if you absolutely must have the latest gunpla and don't want to buy online. They're good for Anime figures as well, which is the main reason I drop by there.

Anime Town (728 Sydney Rd, near Albion station but you can take a tram up as well), they have a decent supply of Gunpla and figures and they also stock some Resin conversion kits as well as some stock of the "HG Builders Weapons" packs that were available in Japan but never exported.

Gundam Universe in Carnegie (Level 1, Suite 3, 23 Koornang Road right next to Carnegie station), stock lots of Gunpla and a few non-gunpla kits (Zoids) as well as a space for people to build the kits. Drinks, too. They used to stock Koto Muv-Luv kits but have stopped because I'm the only nut who actually buys them. :(

For the other places:

Hearns Hobbies is a bit pricier for Gunpla but I find I get along with the guys there quite a bit. And not just for Gunpla, as they have a decent range of RC, train, tank, and aircraft kits as well. If you want to chat about modelling techniques as well as buying Gunpla, they'd be the people I'd point you to.

Metro Hobbies has both a City store and a Box Hill store. The City store tends to have more Gunpla and is generally okay, but tends to be busy on weekends. Especially when it's a bunch of kids whining and their parents complaining about why their kids have to assemble their own robot toys. Box Hill store has less gunpla but I find it's the quieter shop.

Minotaur's issue is that they get their stock from US sellers. So retail upon retail upon retail. I rarely buy Gunpla from them unless nobody else has it--usually I'm there picking out comics or action figures. Minotaur also used to sell Koto kits but nowadays it's sporadic.

Hard to say with Animasia as the owner has changed. I never had problems before but I haven't really been there since the ownership change. Might have to drop by there after my move of house.

There are other shops but recently a few of them have been in limbo or have closed (OzAnimart) so it's harder for me to say.

Andrew's Hobbies in Deer Park. Plenty of fresh Gunpla stock plus tons of paints and other building goodies. Bandai Builders Parts, Bandai decals, military, aircraft, trains & diecast plus a spray booth and build area.
